The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

Date: November 29, 2024

Author: Stephen Chbosky

Genre: coming of age story, young adult YA, psychological/teen drama

This is a recommendation by Mz. Elizabeth Klehfoth, (round of applause!). It finally came in today! My librarian said she saw the movie when it first came out, ‘a long time ago,’ but didn’t recall how she felt about it. According to the back cover this is/was a ‘cult phenomenon.’ When in the same blurb mention was made of the Rocky Horror Picture Show? I just couldn’t wait!

Follow-up: I just finished this and now know what it means when a book claims to be a ‘coming of age’ story. This is it. This is the one. I don’t know really how much of a cult following this book has and if it did, I believe it’s petered out. I say this because I’ve been asking everyone I know that reads and was alive and remembers 1991, as I do, if they remember this book or the movie. And everyone seems to be drawing a blank when I ask, although most seem to have heard of it in passing.

Regardless, it was great, and this should cause a stir all over, again, as it discussed what are even now, today, relevant and current topics. Same as they were back in 1991.

In all? I found the subject matter was a wonderful exploration of the times. Of learning who we were to ourselves, and who we were to each other was very touching!

Top notch!
