Author: Toni Morrison
Genre: literary fiction, coming of age tragedy, Bildungsroman
Bildungsroman definition per Wikipedia: ‘a literary genre that focuses on the psychological, moral, and emotional growth of a protagonist from youth to adulthood.’
This explains why I didn’t care for it. It’s a tragedy. I’ve never cared for tragedies as I’m a positive person, at least I strive to be. And now, my review….
Rated ‘beyond R’
I kept seeing Toni Morrison’s name splashed around town on the books I’ve been reading of late. So I went ahead and requested this book from my library and settled in for an enjoyable read.
However, the scene with the woman and the cat seemed a bit like beastiality. But then I figured I was just trippin’. Maybe I had misunderstood what I was reading? I must have. So I continued.
When I was closing in on the end of the book I arrived at the scene where Cholly raped his own daughter. I just couldn’t anymore. This wasn’t my jam. And it won the Nobel Prize in 1993? Weird. Why?
Update February 27, 2025:
I am still disturbed by the images Toni Morrison portrayed. Yikes!
